BETWEEN SELVES
BETWEEN SELVES is our first conceptual video project exploring identity. For this project, we conceived, designed, and handcrafted an original garment inspired by traditional Asian clothing.
The Evolution of Identity
We see identity as an inheritance, shaped by our environment and personal history. We then seek to take control of it or rebuild it, before watching it evolve and transform as we move through different situations.
This concept gives us the opportunity to translate this idea into images without relying on dialogue, using only locations, camera movements, and their symbolic significance.
The Protagonist
To embody the main character, we looked for a female model whose appearance was difficult to categorize, someone capable of transforming with each situation, yet whose presence would primarily convey an inner confidence independent of others' opinions or approval.
Minh Thuy's tattoos, for example, offered an interesting indication of this autonomy: a way of expressing personal choices that might be judged by others, without feeling the need to justify them.
What Is the Purpose of This Concept?
This project is our first exercise in conceiving and producing short-form videos. A format that may seem simple in theory, but in practice requires finding the right balance between creative intent, production constraints, and an authentic result.
The initial script differed considerably from the final result, particularly in its energy. The performances of models and actors bring an element of authenticity that would be counterproductive to control entirely. Our role is therefore to adapt to this reality, adjust our original intentions, and build the film around what works naturally, without forcing performances or creating something artificial.
Conclusion
Between Selves received a positive response on social media. In our view, several elements may explain this reception. The locations, both distinctive and iconic, helped create a sense of familiarity and allow viewers to project aspects of their own identity onto the film.
Minh Thuy's energy also helped the film move beyond its introspective dimension, making it feel more alive and engaging. This experience taught us that a project is not simply about executing an initial idea: our role is to establish a coherent framework, then allow the locations, people, and circumstances to bring it to life. Ultimately, we created the conditions for the film, and the rest emerged from the encounter between our intentions and reality.
